William J. Ross Miscellaneaous Papers 1869-1907

Small collection from William Ross that consists of a holograph manuscript describing an expedition to the highest point of the Santa Rita Mountains in 1869; two letters from Ross, one to resign from his membership in the Arizona Historical Society, 1895, and the other, written on behalf of the Society, inviting participants to a Memorial Day celebration, 1903; and a typescript copy of his obituary. A typescript copy of the manuscript is also present.

Army officer William Ross served in the Civil War mustering out with the brevet rank of Major-General of Volunteers. He graduated from West Point, and then while serving with the United States Army as Second Lieutenant, he was sent to Arizona Territory in 1868 where he served under General George Crook.
